I have that problem sometimes but it doesn't bother me since I don't sell at farmers markets. All you have to do is make that top slice a little deeper.

I am having this issue extremely, and as my internal tomatoes are fine, but the over hanging ones are not. I also notice the ones on the east side of our house at the least effected... I blame ours on:

3. Fruit temperature fluctuations and leaf removal. Wide fluctuations in temperature can also induce cracking. This is true especially when plants have been de-leafed too early leaving fruit without protection. The exposed fruit heats up dramatically in the sun. At night it cools relatively quickly and the differential is bigger than it would have been had the leaves covered the fruit. The expansion and contraction of the epidermis and its cells can result in cracking.

Some varieties are certainly more prone to cracking than others.

My schedule does not allow me to run the sprinklers more often than twice a week. The soil is very porous. There are quite a few summer weeks when running the sprinklers 3 times would be better.

. . . lots of soil moisture . . . little soil moisture. . . lots of soil moisture . . . little soil moisture . . .

Also, overhead sprinklers aren't the best but that's what I've got to work with.

I believe splitting is caused by too much water.I was working out of town from Wednesday until today,so obviously I couldn't tend to my garden. We had a huge rain Thursday and Friday, after a dry spell of 3 weeks. When I got home this afternoon,I found many tomatoes split and ruined.

The Marion variety wasn't affected as much as my Brandywines. The Brandywines literally burst open all the way around and were just ruined.Had I been home,I would have pulled them a little early, soon after the rain, and let them ripen up in the house.

My cherry tomatoes suffered heavy damage, also.

Helpful link, mine are splitting too but I think it is from water. No rain for 3 weeks then a ton of rain every 3 days. I'm about ready to start cracking so I know how they feel. The weeds are making the most of it too.
