have done this to my hanging baskets TWICE this year. (I replaced them after they demolished the ones that where out all winter. ) After planting these and putting them up, they left them alone for about 2 montths, now they are pulling them apart again. I think it is the sparrows. Any Ideas to deter them would be helpful.

I have used a toy cat, Carol Dee.

The cat moves around a lot ;). It is nearly hidden wherever it hangs out for a few hours. The birds stay well away from it.

A toy snake may work but I've never had a toy snake nor know of any kids with one I can borrow.

I guess they are using it for nesting material? What about offering them something else? Dryer lint, pet hair, etc? The other thing you could do is cover the stuff they like, with something else. I wonder if they would go for the moss sheets? Seems late in the season for them to be still collecting nesting material...

Thanks .
Steve,I do have a rubber snake around, may put that on rail below and see if it helps.
Lesa, I thought the same. Maybe they nest several times a summer? IF I get deesperate, I will bag them withplastic and make holes for drainage. ( I won't like the look, but want to save the baskets.)
