We got some new fish today, one of them is a shubukin goldfish. The label on the tank said they get to 6", so I was thinking it would be okay in the tank we had for our 5" common goldfish. After reading information about the shubukins, everything I've read says they get up to 13"!! And they don't take all that long to get there, from what I've read. So I've decided I need to build a goldfish pond/water garden. I've been thinking about it for quite some time, but I think I will actually do it this time
First off, I won't have the money to get materials for this until probably July or August, would that be too late in the year to move goldfish into the pond?
I'm planning on having at least part of the pond at 3' deep, to make sure it doesn't freeze completely. I don't think I'll have the rest of it any less than 1 1/2' deep to make sure that my goldfish are not a 'free meal' for a hungry raccoon :/
I don't want a huge pond, but I want to make sure there is plenty of room for probably 6-8 shubukins, or maybe some shubukins and some common goldfish. I assume they'd have babies too, so I'd probably need to accomodate for that. I've read that I need 1 sq. ft. of surface for every 1" of fish; so if I have 6 5-in. fish, I'd need 30 sq. ft. of surface? that would be 5'x6', right?
What type of liner works best? The flexible or hard (preformed) liners?
What kind of plants would I need, and what type of soil? Is the soil just 'put' in the pond, or are the plants potted?
Do they have to have a filter? I've read both sides of the story on this one. I'd rather have it be as self-sustaining as possible.
Is a fountain/waterfall necessary?
Any tips are helpful Thanks
