:frow Hi everyone :frow

You might have seen me moaning about all the nettles that keep coming up in my garden -- WELL I think this site might help me, along with eating them which I already do, they suggest drinking them. So watch this video:

http://www.eatweeds.co.uk/how-to-make-a-nourishing-nettle-infusion#more-410

It is supposed to make my skin really soft as well as being kind to my inside.

If anyone else has any good tips, or information, I would love to hear about them. :frow

Our weather here has been so wet & mild lately that I have plenty of young plants to practice on -- SIGH.........!!

Hattie, I love love love your posts about herbs! Thank you!

I don't know what nettle is, but the USDA claims it grows in my area, so i'm going to have to see if i can find it. :weee

So stinging nettles DO have a redemptive quality after all, huh? lol

They're actually really pretty plants. If only they didn't hurt. :(

I've enjoyed nettles at the dinner table, Hattie :). Cooked, there isn't a lot of difference between the taste and texture of nettles and spinach, to my way of thinking :).

I have also used the dry leaves as an herbal tea but the flavor wasn't quite as I expected. Or, maybe it was "exactly" as I expected. It seemed very similar to dipping a spoon into a pot of boiled spinach and drinking that . . . .

That's ookaaay but not the sort of thing I care much about.

I'm an herbal tea drinker and grow some things in the garden for that purpose. I've talked about that before on TEG. And, a cup of the water that winter squash has been boiled in is very pleasant but quite a different thing than leaves steeped in hot water. (Oh, squash leaves as a green are wonderful, too. They'd probably make a nice tea.)

Anyway, nettles seem more like "food" to me. I've read the warning - maybe I wouldn't eat them on a frequent basis but . . . I'd probably get in trouble with spinach if I ate it every day, bathed in it, and drank it as a tisane, also ;).

:frow Hi Steve :frow

I too love nettles as a green vegetable but your remark about squash leaves came as a huge surprise -- I've never thought (or read) of them being eaten...!! That is exciting, thank you for that. :bow Any tips on cooking? Or do you treat them like other 'greens'. I tend to steam mine these days & then naughtily drop a large lump of butter on them........Mmmmm!! Maybe with a squueze of lemon juice.

I love TEG -- I learn something new nearly every day! :D

That'll do it, Hattie!! But, I should have said the "growing tips" of the squash vine.

such great info

every single spring we have cream of nettle soup as a tradition to ward off the allergies
it works :)

I know this sounds insane but I wish I had a nettle patch in the yard

but then when people even say the word morning glory I shun the topic

funny how some things can be so obrusive and others are a joy!

I adore the flavor of nettles and we also drink the tea

but only in the spring when they first come up and only from areas I know are clean

thanks Hattie! awesome stuff :love

PS I think I will be using them more for other issues mentioned.. especially the iron I knew they had lots of minerals but that is good to know!

:frow Hi HiD :gig

I wrap a lot of BBQ meat & fish up in nettles when I'm cooking them -- it slows the process down as well as giving it great flavour. If the leaves get too crispy I remove them & add new ones. It is great with a whole shoulder of lamb which I spear with garlic & rosemary. I sear it first to seal the meat then wrap with the nettles. It is so delicious -- you must try it. Can you get good lamb in the US now -- when I worked there I very rarely saw it on any menus & friends told me that it was hard to come by.......? :idunno

I also wrap whole fish in them -- like trout -- SO GOOD! :D
