I have been studiously reading Craigs List for a few weeks looking for some point of lay pullets with no success. The good ones were always gone or too far away. Last night I found an ad for some black laced red Wyandottes. Not quite point of lay but I thought it was time to compromise.
I got 3 14 week olds, $10 each, 3 9 week olds for $5 each ( she was pretty sure they were pullets but sold them cheap in case one turned out to be a roo) a brown leghorn whose daddy was a chocolate, so she's really pretty, and a two year old black lace red hen. I know... she's old, but I felt sorry for her and she was only $5 and she's still laying. Oh yeah, one of them is a blue LRW.
These aren't hatchery birds, just ones she culled from her breeding program. Hey, if they lay eggs I'm happy. I don't care if their color or confirmation isn't perfect!
So I'm happy. They are staying in the Doggie Hilton until I "take care" of my non layers some time this week.
Yoohoo Lesa... remember you said you'd mentor me? I'll be in touch!
Oh yeah, it turns out that I was an egg customer of hers before I got my own hens. Funny.
