Hello fellow gardeners, I have a question for you seasoned planters.
I usually go by the Farmers Almanac to plant my veggies, berries, fruit trees, root crops etc.(takes the guess work out) and I usually have a pretty nice garden give or take some. This year I have not had time to put anything out, because I am helping my boss put out her garden this year. She wants to know all about gardening ( I have only been planting a garden for the past three years), I still consider myself an amateur, but I'm willing to help a girl out. Anyway to the questions (N. Central Kentucky area)

(1) In your opinion is it too late to put out a garden?
(2) Do you only plant by the Almanac, or just plant whenever you want to?
(3) Is it too late to plant certain vegetables/root crops?

I still would like to get my garden out too, about a week after my bosses. We are supposed to be planting her garden tomorrow 6/4.

Thanks!

:frow Welcome to TEG, MrsGardener. (You think we might be related, by marriage ;)?)

(2) Do you only plant by the Almanac, or just plant whenever you want to?
You should have some answers from someone closer geographically than I am but I just had to respond to that 2 part question:

2a. no, 2b. no.

;)

Steve :)

Oh, I have planted a NEW garden on that very date of 6/4, before. If I remember right: It was entirely sweet corn, green beans and various types of squash and cucumbers :). Right here, right now, I will put out my eggplants and basil in the next day or 2.

I appreciate the welcome and your experienced opinion.
I have heard plenty of people say that not planting by the Almanac is a no-no, so I have just always done it that way. For instance Sweet potatoes if you plant off moon you will only get leaves and no root, but if you plant by moon the roots will be fine, of course last year was the first year I had ever planted sweet potatoes (I planted by moon) and all I dug up was dirt :hu
Thanks again, and I knew I had to be related to someone on here ;)

Welcome.. hope to hear from you often, and hear how the gardens progress.
Do you have a county extension office in your area? They usually have a ton of advice about local gardening, animal husbandry etc...
Good Luck!

You know, everyone has the urge to rush out the minute they can and plant...we are all so tired of winter and no gardening!! I am not sure how much is gained in a week or two. Especially if you are planting transplants-I say the only day better than yesterday to start your garden, is today!!! Go for it- and let us know how you do!

You didn't say where you lived. I'm in zones 5/6. Where I live it is now too late to start anything from seed (and too early to start seeds for crops that can be planted twice.) The stores with garden centers are starting to clearance their annuals, and it's a good time to put those directly into the ground.
If your relationship with your boss is important to you, you might take the extra time to dig a little deeper between the rows, lay down 1/4 inch thick newspaper and cover that with soil to prevent weeds. (I'm new to the newspaper thing, so chime in anybody who knows better than me. )
Keep an eye on any plants that are waiting to go into YOUR garden, so that they are watered and don't get too potbound. If you're like me, you have larger pots to transplant some of them into while they wait.
I'm betting that when you're done both gardens a good long soak in the tub is in order. :D
