Alex,

I can understand you wanting your truck with the nice weather around the corner, but I have two other vehicles to finish before yours. If you need your truck quick. I can put the bed back on it and drop it off where ever you want. I will give you the parts and paint that have been bought and figure out the labor to date and refund any money that was not used. Please let me know how you would like me to proceed.

i think i'd be looking for someone else to work on it. sounds like this guy has too much going on his plate if he has 2 other vehicles to get done before yours when he gave you a time frame when he took it on. had you seen any of this guy's completed projects or heard anything from anyone who worked with him before? that might be the deciding factor for me to ship it over to someone else.

if you could find a shop in your area that does sand blasting/painting cars at a reasonable price i would have him deliver directly to them. you wouldn't want the exposed metal that he did work on to get rusty again.
there are a couple shops in my area that i drive past every day to get to work but i have no clue how expensive it could be.

try & check out a couple of sites that do car/truck restoration & see if there are a couple shops in your area they recommend.

He was a friend of my sister and brother inlaw. They go to car shows for PT cruisers and know him from the shows. One major fact is I don't have a garage don't want bare metal to rust. I have caught him in some untruths. He would tell me something was done, then a month later forget and say it still has to be done. I didn't mind the time during winter looked at it as winter storage. Now that spring is here I want it back to use.

Any chance you have his two month promise in writing? His estimate for the work? Have you driven out to see how much has been done on the truck yourself?

If you want it done sooner, you might have to take it somewhere else. That may involve taking the first shop to Court (if his expenses to date are too high) if you want the truck done properly for about the same total price at another shop.

I'm wondering when did he get those 2 cars that are ahead of you? I would guess recently. I can understand being behind on a project but that many months is ridiculous. He is not the only person out there doing good work. I'm sure you can find someone else. I would.

Oh yeah, 7 months, that is excessive. There should be some evidence that he has gotten something done in that time. Is the auto shop his business or does he have a day job? Still, too long to wait and he has not come even close to keeping his promise. So have you only fronted him the money for the paint and supplies? I hope he doesn't rob you on the "labor" that was supposedly done to this point. I would try to find another shop with a better reputation. I would tell him to continue on for now and then when you're ready, come and get it quickly with little notice. Catching him off guard will give him less time to think of ways to get one over on you.

I thought his response sounded a little testy, with no apology or explanation for the long delay. Maybe he thinks he can keep you on the hook while he works on other vehicles for more impatient people.
