couple of hours, after failing so many times with lavender, I just assumed it would grow in NY.

A couple of hours isn't too bad. You could make a weekend of it and spend the night and see the surrounding countryside. I've failed growing lamb's ears and bay leaf 3 times. Now for some reason they do great and I don't think I've done anything different. Are there people in your neighborhood that can grow it? If so, I wouldn't stop trying.
