I babysat grandson (15 months old) the other day, and after his dad came home we sat and talked. I watched the baby interact with their huge dog. Baby took the dog's bones one at a time out of dog's crate, and put them in dog's mouth, then pulled them out. Occasionally dog would bite down on one just a little, to give some resistance. After baby put the last bone in dogs mouth, he then stuck it in his own mouth and chewed on it. He then stuck his other hand in the dogs mouth. The dog bit down ever so gently. Baby pulled at the dog's big floppy lips, with the dog tolerating it all happily.
Then baby found a plastic drinking straw and poked it in first his mouth, then the dog's, then back. I eventually intervened when he decided to poke the straw up the dog's nose.
Earlier, I had watched baby walk across the floor, stop, plop down and pick something off the bottom of his bare foot, stick it in his mouth, get up and start walking again. I don't know what it was. Hopefully a raisin?
They say a kid raised around animals is healthier. I hope so. This child's parents will never be accused of keeping their house too clean.

A patient dog is such a great thing with kids. So Lucky, is this the grandchild you were just expecting? I can't believe he's 15 months old already.

We had two Newfs when Kid#1 was a baby. He would crawl up and lie on their backs,
pull their tongues out of their mouths and once I caught him trying to insert a twig
in a dogs nostril. They were so good with him and Kid#2 when it was his turn to be annoying.

I'm not a germaphobe, but there would have been no bone sharing on my watch! :sick

Sweet doggy. :love Husbands dog is 9 now. He was a youngster when Grandson #1 came along and 3 years letter #2 joined he harassment! He tolerated so much! Even had times when all three of them crammed into his kennel.
Here he was kicked out to make room for boys. LOL

Not much room left but they all fit in it, snuggly! :)

A dog like that is a treasure, to be sure. But the bone sharing thing........ I'd have to stop that. :sick I'll bet that dog would protect the baby too. On the house cleaning thing.....the baby shouldn't have allergies!

My saying about having a baby was, "You drop out the land of the living for 2 years and do nothing but baby." I was on my feet, behind their every footstep. Now I do that with our 16 month old grand daughter. She plops down on our Australian Shepherd and I scold her for it, because it hurts the dog. Polly, the Aussie, is 11 years old and will growl when the baby falls on her, but just tries to get away. Polly takes everything else in the baby dishes out. Parker, our black Lab/Great Dane, loves anything the baby does to him. She can wallow all over him. He will lay beside her.

If his dad hadn't been there, I would have taken the bone from him, but I figured if the parent doesn't mind.....
At my house, I put the dog toys/bones out of baby's reach. But then, Penny is not as tolerant of babies.
Yes, Thistle, this is the one (of two). We have a grand daughter one week younger, too.

Aww a little sharing isn't a bad thing.

Then again when I was less than a year but still crawling I would gnaw on our boxer's raw hides along with her. She'd be at one end I'd be happily teething at the other. Katie was an amazing dog.

I had a cousin who let her kids interact with the dogs in such a manner....sharing of much germs between the two, dog licking the child's face and vice versa, etc. They thought it was "cute".

One day her toddler started coughing and choking as she sat on the kitchen floor....mom snatched her up and tried to clear her airway but there was no object there. There were MANY objects there.....the child had round worms crawling out of her throat and her nostrils. She was filled with them, simply infested, and was gagging on them as they crawled up and out.

There's interaction between child and animal and then there is OVER interaction...I'd say sharing of food items between dog and child is probably not the best idea. :sick
