I have a lot of recipes that call for a bushel of tomatoes or 1/2 a bushel of peppers.... How to you measure a bushel?

When I pick in my garden I use 2 gal buckets. I can look at a bucket of green beans or cucumbers and know if its enough for a canner of beans or pickles but not having a bushel basket I have no idea how to measure it.

I remember seeing bushel baskets when I was a child but my experience is everything is smaller that what I remembered as a child.

When I buy canning tomatoes in OH, they count two 5-gal buckets as one bushel.

I don't think that was a dumb question ;) I didn't have a clue how big a bushel was either. In fact the image that came to my mind was the baskets people use in my area for selling peaches. I now know that would be too small for a bushel. So thanks for teaching me something too :D

Are your recipes from old family/friend recipes, or are they from books? Just curious what type of recipes use the bushel measurement. :)

I don't think it was a dumb question either. I've always thought the "dumb questions" were the ones NOT asked cause ya never know until ya do.
And with that analogy, I'm the one with the "dumb question" problem cause I've not known what a bushel measurement was and had never asked-but always wondered.
