I saw this on FB on a homestead page I follow. Too cool not to share!

Paintable Moss Art

1. Crumble 3 handfuls of moss and add to blender. Pour 3 cups lukewarm water into the blender.
2. Add 2 tbsp water retention crystals or gel.
3. Add 1/2 cup buttermilk.
4. Pulse blender periodically until thoroughly mixed.
5. Pour into proper container for painting/storing.
6. Paint onto wood or rough concrete.
7. Mist weekly or more often if required due to weather conditions/climate.
Illustration of the process here.

This might be a good way to decorate some old terra cotta planters...well, the possiblities are endless.

If anyone tries this, please come back later and post pics, ok! :caf

I have been absolutely fascinated by this idea- You try it and tell us how it works! Lol! I think everything is better covered in moss! If you remember my wood slab walkway from last year? Well, I am filling all the little spaces between the circles of wood with moss. I love the way it looks!

Oh i did this years ago and it totally worked!! I dont live at that house anymore, so i dont know the long term outcome...just keep it moist by misting a lot.

That's a great idea! I have a cement birdbath that I've been hoping would start mossing up on the pedestal. I think I'll give it some encouragement. :)

I like this idea!

Can it be mixed without a blender?

I'm sure you could use an immersion (stick) blender too.

Yea! I'm glad to hear it works. Thanks, NwMtGardener!

Thinking about painting designs on my water heater shed attached to the shaded west side of my cabin with moss :)

When I googled this for more info and images, I got the most hits by searching "moss graffiti". Seems it is a form of Guerrilla Gardening (remember the thread about seed bombs ?) Nearly all of the examples I found were in urban settings on concrete walls.

I thought this was neat...reverse moss painting , a mural done by pressure washing and cleaning to remove pre-existing moss from a wall to form an image.

Here is a zebra , two fish and a bear .

I'm really intrigued by what I might be able to do with this. I can't wait to try it! I think the more natural canvasses like stone make a nicer composition. The moss looks like it belongs there. It kinda stands out like a sore thumb on plywood, imo.

I am with Lesa everything is better covered in moss. I have tryed the buttermilk a few times and was disapointed.I found the best way to grow moss on cement object was to put it in a goldfish pond i have. Not sure how good it is for the fsh but moss grows in a couple of days.
