Hi all

I used to be on byc and so glad to see this site now that I'm back!

I have a question about planting peach trees? I bought two of them -- a Flavorctest and a Redskin. I noticed the redskin says "self-fruitful" but the flavorctest has no info tag and it got me to thinking -- do I need to plant them close together or far apart? Or does it matter? Do I need a 2nd flavorctest?

Please help! I want to get them in the ground asap -- I'd like to save the fruit they have already set. But all I know about fruit trees is we used to have one. I'm a bit southeast of Dallas TX btw. Any other special considerations besides making sure they enough space and sun, drainage and water? I plan to top-dress with compost later and water with compost tea. Some parts of the property receive water from an automatic aerobic septic system.

Thanks!!!

Plant them where you want them to be in regards to aesthetics.
All the peach trees I have seen are self fertile, thats not to say there couldn't be some that need pollination.
Many times something will say "self fertile but produces better with another type" either way you are covered with the two types you have.
You wouldn't want another flavorcrest anyway because they cannot pollinate eachother.
You will always need different types of fruit trees for them to pollinate eachother.
As far as pollinating each other they don't have to be too close together, in fact even if you had say one apple tree which needs another for pollination and your neighbor had an apple tree that was compatible you would still be all set.
Have fun, I planted peach trees this year too, in fact we planted 22 fruit trees this past week, I am hoping they all settle in well in the spots I picked for them. Time will tell I guess.

Welcome back, MatersNTaters! :hugs
My peach tree just blossomed out!! :weee I'm So glad, because we had pretty much our last frost last night, at 34 degees F, and we went 3 solid weeks with lows in the 40's. A few years back I lost ALL of my peaches when the blossoms fell off after a freeze. BTW, I understand that peaches like it dry.

I'm looking to plant a peach tree too, Hale Haven is the variety i'm going to plant. I've always wanted a peach tree in the garden, i like how the leaves are long and narrow looking. Yes, peaches for the most part are self-pollinating.

Good Luck!! ;)

Thanks SO much everyone! I'm pretty new to fruit trees, except that we had a peach tree when I was a kid, but I don't know the type. I have them at their places and hope to het them in the ground tomorrow. They still look great. I picked a couple of the driest spots in the yard and I hope it works. Good luck with y'all's peaches too! And thanks again very much for the help!!!

Just watched the recording of last week's Illinois Gardener and a listener had a question about peaches. He said that he'd brought home six 5-6 foot peach trees from a friend's property in Michigan, and wanted to know about the care. Their answer? The experts said that we in Illinois (zones 5-6) are pushing it with growing peach trees this far north. They suggested planting the trees close to established, hopefully indigenous trees that the peach trees can use to block the winter's winds. Gee. Who knew?!? :hu
Hope this helps somebody. :D

You might call the nursery/catalog you bought it from and get info on the Redskin.

Thanks. Actually I got them at Costco (not a place I expected to find really nice fruit trees ) so I don't know as they'd be much help -- but I bet one of my seed companies or someone might carry them. I'll look for more info -- thanks!

And I can't believe -- peach trees in Michigan??? Wow!!!

I have 1 flavorcrest (I pollinated it myself with some tiny paint brushes), I also have 2 elberta peaches. My elberta are too young and didn't blossom to pollinate my flavorcrest, so I did it myself!

You should be fine with just the one though, I was told it was self pollinating... and as its my only peach tree with fruit developing I'm happy with it! :D
