BJ ... looking at the pasture's third photo, I see bluish plants. Could they be star thistle a very NASTY invasive plant ? :hu If so, DO NOT let horses feed on it as it will destroy a pensil erasor size area in their brain ( I have necropsied several horses with this at the University Vet School ) , paralize the lower jaw and they will starve to death. :barnie One would be well advised to erradicate it asap. :old

bobm, most of that bluish is little bluestem, but there is some thistle in there - don't know if it's "star thistle". that sounds hideous! I won't have horses on it, but intend to bale it and make it available for goats. same thing apply???

this whole pasture renovation is a lot more complex than I originally thought.

thanks a lot for input!

Beautiful pasture!
I was out of town last week, and had a small pasture that was in need of mowing before I left... I was mowing the yard and along the driveway last night and all of a sudden noticed that the whole pasture had shot up over the past few days!!!! It's going to be over my head when I get in there to mow!!! :barnie I wish I had some way to bale it for winter use.

Bj, look up Canadian thistle or post a photo of your thistle so we can identify what you have. Or look up Star Thistle. Ill bet what you are seeing is the Canadian type, which is actually from Eurasia originally. That stuff is still nasty but it doesnt rot the brain. I have memories as a kid of digging that stuff out of a pasture field on hot August days with a mattock. Brutal.

Cane, is it big enough to maybe get a farmer to bale it for you, especially those small bales so you can handle it without big machinery? Maybe offer to split. They get half and you get half. If it is the big round bales, do you need it moved?

Star thistle is indeed, wicked nasty stuff. It gets a seriously hostile thorn in it after it blooms, hence the "star". It does cause brain damage in the horse, as bobm stated. Horrible thing to see a horse knocking all its teeth out trying to scoop food into their mouth. :( Hopefully you don't have any. I think it's difficult to eradicate.

Which thistle is it? That Star thistle has a yellow flower. The Canadian thistle has a purple flower. Both are bad but the Star seems a lot worse.
