Pineapple Question

I love folklore and history. The Pineapple is the universal symbol for hospitality. Does anyone know how that came to be? It goes back to Colonial days as a symbol.

Lucky that was interesting, but I question it. At that time pineapples must have been very rare and expensive. Captain would really have to be showing off his money, to waste one like that.

I take that back after thinking about the time period Mark Twain Dubbed the " gilded age" The rich covered everything in gold to show off their money.
