This is my first year growing them, and I've been pretty disappointed with the results. Scrawny plants, very small fruit, which I know is not what the package described. It's been a weird growing season, so I don't want to judge based just on what I'm seeing right now. Have any of you guys grown them? What have your results been like?

I tried them again this year....no fruit and scrawny plants. The first year they were in 1/2 wine barrels so I "forgave" them. But this year the plant was in the ground. Poor weather, but other varieties are doing just fine :idunno

These are notorious for inconsistent growth and yields. Glad I did'nt read your post two years ago as I had two plants with each producing 10-12 fruits. But since then zilch. May I suggest trying an Emerald Evergreen heirloom. These ripen an amber color with green flesh that is mid acid and sweet. The yield is not real high but it is a good replacement for the pineapple type as they taste a bit richer

Hmm...maybe they mispackaged them? Mine were very large fruits and so pretty too. They had a more mellow, sweet flavor than some of the other yellows I've tried (not very lemony or acidic, but still good). As an heirloom variety, they are probably more prone to disease. Maybe that had something to do with your disappointing harvest? It's hard to tell. Some varieties just don't perform well in certain areas of the country.

ETA: Hillbilly is another similar yellow/striped variety I've had good luck with. Or Mr. Stripey.

I agree with Journey-could be mispackaged or improperly fermented before prepping for packaging. I think that some of the red/yellows do better in milder areas. I tried a pineapple at an heirloom tasting last week and it was rather bland; but it was also grown in central S.C. in the HEAT.
