I'm waiting to direct seed my broccoli and other crops like kale and cauliflower for the Fall harvest. Just wondering if I should direct seed them now or wait a few more weeks. I know if you plant them when they mature when the weather is too hot they'll bolt. I have my collards and cabbages up and growing already so just need to get the other crops in soon.

What do you guys think? :/

I was supposed to plant mine on June 3rd. Should be soon for you too, since you're only one or two hardiness zones above me.

If you are talking about your garden in NY-go ahead. I have never had broccoli bolt- cauliflower always bolts!

So all this talk about planting collards and broccoli and such has me thinking. When should I plant collards? I want the big ones like the guy we buy them from every year has. We can't fit one in a grocery sack. I believe anything I planted now would definitely bolt, quickly.

I live near Athens, GA!!! ;)

I too, like the big leaves and I live in Portsmouth, Virginia. Last year I set out my collard seedlings on August 21st. Even after harvesting 12.3 pounds, I let them stay in the ground through the winter so I would have an early spring crop. It worked. Even though we had a hard winter, I got another 12 pounds before they started to bolt in March. I think if I had gotten the seedlings in the ground at the end of July, I would have had a larger fall harvest. If I were to use seeds, I would start right about now to allow for germination time. That would put me on schedule with last year's successful crop.

Thanks guys! ;)

I guess I have some broccoli to plant this week and maybe other fall crops. I actually haven't grown broccoli successfully before but I did get a good harvest of broccoli raab this season and in the past.

Whats more exciting in gardening then a challenge :) .

It's never too early to start thinking about the Fall garden. You know in gardening, planning is Everything!
