planting Artichoke seeds..?

I'm having a little trouble growing artichokes from seed, last year when i tried they grew then before they could get the true leaves they died. It says on the packet to plant the seeds so that the seedlings can get temps under 50 degrees for 10 days. Should i plant them indoors and transplant or direct in the garden? Has anyone tried growing artichokes from seed and can help me out?
