A friend would like to know whether grape vines can be planted in the fall in the high country of Utah? He wants to plant where the temperatures get down to minus 40 F in the winter. He is planning to plant cold hardy varieties such as Marquette and Bluebell.

Everything I can find says grapes are to be planted in the spring, although I did find a site where the growers were planting vines in British Columbia in the fall.

if he does plant them in the fall he'd want to make sure they are mulched heavily around the trunk the first season. leaves do well as a cheap mulch in my area, after all, nature provided them. :p you do want to be careful with wind if you are in an area that will be blustery cold with it.

i have to dig up and move some young vines before our house sells so i'm thinking just after the harvest of the few berries they have would be the best time for mine.

here's a good site i bought from last year. i didn't get any grapevines from them, i got raspberries instead. but their catalog was very informative on the different varieties and their uses and trellis styles they prefer! http://www.doubleavineyards.com/

Thanks for the good info.

I think he should wait until spring to prevent winter heaving.
