Anybody ever planted English peas & sugar snap peas on the same trellis? I'm trying to get ahead of the curve for 2014 & wondered if I can plant both on the same trellis. We like both but I don't need a ton of either sugar or English so instead of trying to create 2 small trellises I'm wondering if I could simply use one of my regular trellises & plant each side with how much I want.

I'm not planning on saving seeds from either variety either.

Thoughts?

I would keep a clear separation on that same trellis so you don't confuse the 2 when picking.

Can you tell the difference between the two varieties easily? It would be good if you had maybe a purple podded and a green podded variety.

Maybe space the sowing times apart so that your planting your sugar snaps when the English peas are almost done?

If your trellis is big enough, you could use Cat's idea but plant something in between the two, like beans. (Better watch out saying that, Marshall might be listening... :hide)

Telling them apart would be my only concern, I like the idea of planting two diff colors for easy id'ing.

Good to know I hadn't thought of that. I've never grown either of them successfully always get them planted too late. Always so dang busy when it's time. Next thing I know grounds too warm & I get terrible germination.

Honestly Id rather do two trellises so I know what I have instead of risking it. Thank you for the input on this....sometimes hair brained ideas need to just stay ideas. :D

I often do. Put one in your mouth and chew it - you will soon know if that pod is edible. Spittoey!

This might be a better idea, since the Snap Peas & English Shell Peas look so much alike: Don't leave the Chinese Peas out. They are quite a bit different and could be sown between the other 2.

I nearly always have the 3 types on the same 4' wide trellis. Now, I've been doing this for decades so it might be easier for me to differentiate between the 3.
