My garden utilizes purchased seedlings, direct seed planting, and seedlings that are grown from seed indoors. To have large plants for outdoor planting, they are placed in an individual pot and grown for about ten days in the greenhouse or protected area. This insures very strong roots are formed. I do this for celery, okra, lettuce, cabbage, kale, melons, cucumbers, cauliflower, broccoli, egg plant, peppers, basil, parsley, brussel sprouts, ground cherry, pak choy, collards, and others. My requirement is usually for about eight plants so this system works out very well.

Lettuce is shown as a typical example.

Romain Lettuce is thriving. A plant was utilized yesterday, which was almost perfect. It could be a bit larger.

Romaine lettuce planted outdoors. The plants were purchased in flats and individually planted in pots to establish a strong root system and kept in the greenhouse for ten days. Pictures depict the operation.

That is beautiful lettuce! You said you have 8 plants. Do you replant lettuce? I am trying to figure out how to have lettuce without running out. I either have too much or none.
