Okay my new quandary is squash. I love squash. My family loves squash. I know if you plant it, you will get more than enough. I have 9 yellow and 2 zucchini. I don't want to put the 9 yellows in my SFG because they will take up space. So has anyone planted squash in buckets or containers with any success? My ground is horrible red compacted clay with sandy top soil. I also have chickens and this needs to be contained in a fence, so space is an issue.

I have a family of 6, 5 are adults. I feed my sister and BIL. I have an adult daughter with mental disabilities and a 7 year old son. Can't forget my WONDERFUL husband. I have a lot of land, but most of it is dense oak trees. I have to position my SFG so that it's in part of the yard that gets the most sun. What other vegetables (other than tomatoes which we already have) grow good in containers. I get free buckets from work.

If I plant squash in my SFG, can zucchini be planted next to it (I know its supposed to remain empty in the next SF) and then grown up vertically? Or cucumbers?

Hi hangin'witthepeeps,

I have grown them in containers in the past but I found that they need to be both wide & even more importantly deep. I got round this by cutting out the base of the topmost container & taping it to the under one (this has to have drainage holes in it). I used a lot of mature chicken compost in the bottom bucket & a lot less of it mixed with good soil in the top one. I only put one plant in each double-height pot along with two stakes (splayed outwards at the top, to which I attatched horizontal slats -- this made a good strong trellis for the plant to grow. They did very well but you will need to water them well as they dry out fast. I would also mulch the top of the pot, both to save water & stop splash-back & wilt.

Hope this helps. :happy_flower
