Is there a reason why I shouldn't do this in zone 6? I'm still trying to locate a place where I can find the plants, but if I can, I'd rather get them in this fall, so that they get a head start in the spring. We had a thriving patch, even after we thinned them and mowed them down. Then the chickens partied in them while we were out of town, and about half of them didn't recover. (The plants, not the chickens! :D)

Chickens and gardens just don't mix, do they? Every spring I plant about a dozen strawberries in one of those berry pots with multiple openings. Come fall, I take them out of that pot and transplant into the ground. Been doing this for years in zone 4. Can't see why you couldn't do the same. As you say, finding the plants maybe the problem...Do you think the chickens dug up the roots, or did they just damage the foliage? I am thinking you may see some of them survive...

I contacted the company shown below. They have provided me with excellent blueberry and raspberry plants in the past.

I just purchased 100 strawberry plants off e-bay.
I don't know how many more she has but they were 15 for $6.00 plus shipping. She says they all have runners with babies on them, and some have as many as 5 on each plant.
The seller uses the name ivy-rose.

This is where I've gotten mine in the past: www.rhshumway.com/. I've been very happy with their quality, and they said they ship until it gets too cold up there (Wisconsin). I think I'm going to get mine there.

I received mine today and have planted one bag, this evening, that was marked 15, plus 6 bare plants. The 15 have made about 60 rooted plants with another 25 or so babies that haven't developed their roots yet.
Lord only knows how many total I'll have.
That's fine with me as the love of strawberrys is what got me back into the garden.
Good luck everyone with your strawberry purchases.
