I have about an acre of unused land toward the back of our place. Since I'm a beekeeper I thought I would like to get some of the weeds out and plant some beneficial flowering plants for my girls. White Dutch Clover and Yellow Sweet Clover are two favorites of honey bees. And most seasons these flower when other flowering plants are not.

Can anyone tell me if clover can be successfully planted in the fall? I have been told that spring is the time for clover planting but springtime is much too busy around here to spend planting in a weed patch. It seems that Mother Nature plants her seeds in the fall and winter. She is much more successful than I am.

Watcha think?

We planted clover last fall, all along the edge of our veggie garden. We had a very, very light winter last year- and the clover survived. If you can afford the experiment, I would try it. I am not sure ours would have worked out, if we had 3 feet of snow... Do you grow borage? That is a favorite of our bees, and it blooms and regrows all summer long.

Oh Smiles, I wish I could do a cover crop. My space/beds are so small and limited and with the ability to plant all most year round, I really don't have an empty bed that long. :(:)

The crimson Clover that grows around here self sows its seeds in fall, and the moist part of the year is winter here.
