My real guess is that some type of insect damaged it, maybe something like a stink bug, but to be honest, I don't know.
From what I remember of our plum trees from my childhood, many many decades ago, the plum trees would set a tremendous amount of fruit but most of it would either fall off when still green or the fruit would turn a bright red, stay real hard, and fall off. The fruit that did ripen was delicious, and usually there was quite a bit of it that actually did ripened.
It does sort of look like a track, as though some sort of critter was chomping its way along. It looks as though whatever it was just ate deep enough to scar the surface without eating all the way through the skin.
If there are only one or two like that I wouldn't worry about it. If there are quite a few you might check with your county Ag people. They'll be in the phone book. You'll probably have to take some in to show them.
