Well I managed to get into something terrible last Friday. I usually do not have a bad reaction to poison ivy so this must be some super nasty plant along our east fence line. I was out collecting branches and leaves for the rabbits along our weedy fence line and I guess I had an encounter of the ugly kind. It started with three stripes on my left wrist. They swelled and turned red within an hour of my encounter. More burning than itching. It has spread up my arm, onto my right arm, onto my face and neck, and now it's starting on my head and legs. Maybe it's gone into my bloodstream. I have never seen anything like this - it starts out as a few pimples or blisters that are extremely painful and then it turns into an ugly rash that drives me crazy. I guess a trip to the Dr. is in my future.

What do you guys do for this kind of rash?

Sorry, but a trip to the Dr. is the only thing that will help now. (I react that way to poison ivy, so I feel your pain,) :hugs

You need to be careful of anaphylactic shock with such a bad allergic reaction. My doctor suggest we always keep benadryl on hand. Seek medical attention ASAP!

Just because you have never had a reaction to posion whatever, doesn't mean that you have a lifetime free ride. I played in the woods all my life and had a reaction to posion ivy, broke out in whelps, blisters, rash and itching madness in my early twenties. Since then, I am highly allergic to it. I wash in diluted clorox bleach when I am exposed to posion ivy and don't even break out in a rash. If I do break out in a rash or blisters, the clorox dries it right up. I really really feel your pain. Get to the doctor.

I had a terrible outbreak of poison ivy 30 plus years ago. Since then I never get it. I do get an itchy reaction to cedar if I get scratched by a cedar branch.

Baymule - my experience was just the opposite. My experience is kind of like catjac1975. When I was about 11 yrs. old I got poison ivy so bad I had to be hospitalized for 6 days. Let's see . . . that was around 1953. I had it in my mouth, in my eyes, all over my skin, and even in unmentionable areas. I had been helping a farmer burn weeds. Ever since that time I have been immune to poison ivy. Of course I don't push it but many times I have been into the weeds with it and I've never have had an itch or rash since.

What I have this time is totally different than a typical poison ivy exposure. The welts and blisters itch a little but not much. My flesh around the affected areas actually ache and hurt like a cut or bruise. Very strange. Also I have a few very hard and very tiny bumps on my hands and my legs. These tiny bumps hurt and if I scratch them (bad boy) they break open and ooze for a long time. But there is a glimmer of hope as the original outbreak area is starting to show signs of drying up and the pain is gone in that area.

My Dr. appointment is for 9:30 this morning. Stay tuned.
