Garden Master
Have you had one?
I was just relating on the humor thread how the little grandmother, who had a positive influence on me gardening, also discouraged me from "pulling my mouth down" . Ha!
I was pleased to see that DW had a 2nd jar of apricot jam for me to enjoy with my purple bread toast and 4-hours-from-rising mug of coffee. I think I influenced her years ago when we had that little apricot tree in one garden and I'd make jam .
I know I influenced her regarding tomatoes. Yep! When I met her, she would only eat cherries. She was NOT gonna be moved to eat my beefsteak! She didn't care if I called them "Fantastic," "Super Fantastic," or "Earliana," or even "Early Girl," or anything else!
I decided I needed to play around with more varieties of cherries or I'd be in sadly limited ... but then, it also occurred to me that it must not be the size of the beefsteaks she didn't like. So, I began to play around with different colors. Colors are associated with flavonoids. Everybody is interested in flavonoids because many of the flavors of our foods come from them!
I learned that I like tomatoes of colors other-than red! She did, too! In fact, I see her playing around with big, red beefsteaks after all these years! When I was talking with her about the choices I made for the 2016 tomato patch, she says, "I like the great, big ones!" Just like it was the most natural thing in the world, for her to say
. Of course, I pointed out that she would have said no such thing a few decades ago .... I didn't press my luck by saying anything further ... you know how women are.
It's another grey, dreary day. I want us to feel good about ourselves. How about you? Have you had a positive influence on anyone? Any ideas on how others could learn from your experience?
Steve
