I had to harvest my potatoes earlier than I had hoped to save them from blight. It wasn't a very big harvest but they are delicious and it'll impress the in-laws when we have fresh new potatoes with homemade chive butter tonight. I also got a nice bunch of green beans off of my bush bean plants, those go on the menu too. I was surprised by a ripe okra when I went out to the garden this afternoon. They grow so darn fast, and I still don't know what to do with them except fry them. Here's a picture of the harvest...

They look great. Makes me wish my 'taters would hurry up! Do you ever pickle your okra? It's really good done with a hot pepper and garlic in each jar.

Actually I planted it just so I could pickle most of it. My husband loves all things pickled, so I'm doing it for him. I'm really surprised that it's doing so well, since it's my first time growing it.
I am from a southern family and my great-grandma used to make me eat fried okra, which I can't stand. Someone recently told me that cooking it makes the snot-like substance go away, so maybe I'll try it that way

I have never tried okra in my life! What does it taste like?
I can't remember the taste, I just remember that it has this horrible mucilaginous substance in it that's very, well...snot like. I wouldn't be growing it if hubby hadn't asked me to.

Like a lot of things, I like okra in small amounts. Pickled stuff the same way, I like a big forkful of sauerkraut not a plateful. It doesn't mean I don't like these things - I do.

I guess I understand why some folk don't like okra but I've only had it a couple times fried but like gumbo :). Soup, Collector -- look for chicken gumbo in the soopermarket.

TMC - you have a potato harvest!!!

Today, I noticed that some of my potato plants are just showing up above ground! Not all but a few . . .
