Can I prow potatoes in sand? We just moved into a new house and our backyard is nothing but sand. Will potatoes grow in this? Do I need to fertilize them more? Do I need to add anything to it?

I am So new to this and I am probably not the one that should be giving advice but it sounds like you need a raised bed. Just a thought, I am curious as to what these guys say to you though.

We made the attempt with Sweet Potatoes last summer harvested them right before thanksgiving. And my garden is on the site of old orange groves. After months of waiting we pulled out about a 5 gallon bucket worth of them. They tasted good. I'm not sure what we did right but they do grow in sand. Next time I'll probably put them in little hills so it will be easier to find them.

They grow in sandy soil around here (*our* property is of course clay, but there are some areas just down the road of extremely sandy soil that host thousand-acre commercial potato farms so obviously the things do grow there reasonably well <g>).

You will need to add a buncha nutrients, though, and be extra careful with keeping the soil constantly and evenly watered.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

When I say sand I don't meen sandy soil, I mean actual sand. It's like a beach in my yard. I have been watching them build other houses in the neighborhood and I think what they do is dig up the whole property and use the dirt and clay to bake a raised base for the foundation and then fill the property back in with sand. It's nice sand too, the kind they use for sand volleyball courts.
