It seems that I waited too long for that new coop. Today, while cleaning out the garden shed I found four pullet eggs. Emergency mode! I quickly made three slap-dash nesting boxes for the sweet birds. I sure hope they like them.

Here they are all together, but I moved them and set the four new eggs into the boxes as a hint.

In cleaning I also removed the lower roosts some of the pullets were using -- most of them were in the rafters -- I replaced them with one larger, more stable roost. Tonight only one girl was roosting there. The rest must have joined the rafter crowd. . . or it was too dark to see where they finally decided to roost.

Just remembered that I removed Nesco's favorite roost as well while I was cleaning. Hum. . . I wonder where he ended up?

one of my newbies keeps laying it by the door. i usually see it in the evenings when i go to close them for the night but there is an occasion when i see one left in the early morning. the problem is my girls all hover by the door to be let out so they shuffle the shavings high in the area near the door. the egg sometimes gets lost in the shavings and i've stepped & broken the hidden eggs. :idunno

Speaking of procrastination, Thing Two, my Australorp mix, is setting on five eggs. Two of them are starting to hatch out. I'm hoping there will be ample time for the chicks to get their feathers before the real cold sets in. This week -- 60s. Next week -- 70s. At this time of year the 70s are a blessing pure and simple.

With 16 new-to-be layers, 7 old hens, and two roosters (in two flocks), I really think a couple of new roosters would be great. There will be a culling before winter. I can't manage 16 eggs a day at the best of times.

a coworker used to take the extra eggs he bought from me and freeze them. he'd separate the white & yoke and put it into ice cube trays. when they were solid enough he would move them to freezer bags to store away. this is good when the chickens stop laying during molting or winter when they....just stop laying.

Not one of my pullets was using the new roost. I just may remove it and end the head thumping I get every time I forget it's hanging in my way. All the youngsters were in the rafters except two that were nesting on the floor next to my 4 year old Coachie. I never did find Nesco. I suspect he's hiding under the rabbit hutch until he finds a new roost.

No one used the nesting boxes either. It is raining a bit today so that should be a good excuse for keeping them inside, at least until noon. I'd hate to think the pullet eggs are being laid outside somewhere, but if they are not in the shed, I figure they are being laid under my bedroom deck. A definite no-no!
