In answer to my own question....;)

turns out here in NM we have the opposite problem-our soil is actually alkaline (someone lied to me!). So into the compost the limes and oranges go!!!

That sounds like a good idea. You may want to chop up the pieces so the decompose a little faster depending on the activity in your compost pile.

Also depending on where you live in Albuquerque check your local garden center. I would recommend Osuna Nursery, Alameda Greenhouse and Rehm's. They are all very nice and knowledable people!:)

I've thrown mine into our compost, I put in so much coffee grounds its amazing the acid level....
