I'm from Indiana, and I'm going to visit my son and his family in San Antonio in late January. He loves to grow in containers, but I thought I'd build a couple of raised beds for him when I'm there. What can you plant in late January in his climate? Is it too early for lettuce, radishes, and peas?

Thanks
Brad

What zone are they in? I am not sure, but I would bet you could. Especially if you had some protection on hand just in case. Like a row cover or something. Find out when their last frost is, that is a better guide to planting dates then the zone, I think.

Warm, they appear to be in Zone 8b or 9a, depending on what zone map you look at. The average frost date is March 1 - 31.....that's the only dates I found. I know around here in S. Indiana, we plant our peas, lettuce, and radishes almost a month before the last hard frost date.

Anyone have any experience with the San Antonio area?

Thanks
Brad

I don't know about the San Antonio area specifically.

But i have to guess that it's probably at least somewhat similar to Houston.

My book, Year Round Vegetables, Fruits, and Flowers for Metro Houston by Bob Randall, recommends planting peas in early January, and lettuce in late January through March. But radishes should've been planted in October or November.

Other crops recommended to plant from seed in January include cabbage, collard, mustard, irish potatoes, squash, multiplying onion, sugar snap peas, mustard spinach, and turnips.

I hope that helps.

And thanks for reminding me. It's January! I need to get to work! ;)
