I've read that artichoke roots are best split up and replanted in the winter, but I never got around to it. I just finished the spring harvest (yum) and cut them back, and I'd really love to split it up and move it now. It is HUGE and I really want it in a different place.
I am okay if it doesn't give me a new crop in the fall if I split/move it now, but will anything bad happen? I'm near San Francisco CA if that matters.
When I split it, should I do it as I would if I were digging up bulbs? Get a shovel and gently dig down and pull the pieces apart? Any advice on how to do it would be appreciated, I find very little detailed information about HOW it is actually done. Everything I read just says "split it apart".
Thanks!
