Rain and Yard Puddles

I have a few places in my front yard, that seem to be slightly lower than the rest of the yard. When it rains, these areas collect water and it takes forever for the puddles to dry up. What is the best way to remedy this problem?

I would fill them in with some sand to start with and then some dirt of some sort over that. You didn't say how large these puddles are but I know you can by bags of topsoil almost anywhere. It'll take a while for the grass to grow over them but it should solve the problem.

Some of the areas are small, but there is this on area that is rather large. It is just annoying when the dog runs through the mud pit, and then tries to come inside! If I fill the muddy areas with sand and then dirt, do I need to stamp it down hard? I don't want the solution to wash away, when we get another big rain.

I think packing down the sand a topsoil, would be a good idea. You do not want an air pocket ruining your attempts at stopping the puddles. Are the puddles out in the open, or is there a runoff causing the puddles?

Can you get landfill from anywhere? I would not put sand down but I would try landfill or dirt. Of course you would then need to seed it with grass seed. You would want to rope it off or somehow keep your dog out of the area until you get grass.
