I mentioned on Cane's thread that I had an empty apartment that needed work. Wednesday we went in and cleaned the wood floors, scraping paint drips, gum, candle wax, small paper stars, etc, anything that could have gotten on or into wood flooring in the past 60 years. Then we washed everything as clean as possible.

While I didn't have 'before' photos, I did take pictures today.
Floor before.JPG Someone didn't sweep the closets so when I got to them, I had to leave them until later. That was the color of much of the floor, especially around the edges. The centers were bare wood and dirt in most places. I stained the whole floor to even out the colors.

Here is the stained floor. Here, with and without shine. Here is the same floor with its coating of polyurethane. I think it turned out pretty well.

We stopped by tonight to check for drying. Here is the final result. I think it makes the apartment look so much better.floor end result.JPG Friday we will put down another coat of polyurethane and Saturday we will have a marathon painting session (the whole place) so everything will look just right for the new tenants.

Those floors are beautiful! What a difference you made. They are so rich looking.

I wish I could have had wood floors in our house, but they require more upkeep than tile. Dh isn't wildly crazy about more upkeep.

Nice!! :thumbsup My dad had his wood floors and wood stairway redone a couple years ago. The house was built in the 40's. I could not believe it was the same flooring. What a difference it makes to buff out the scratches and give it a new coat of polyurethane. Looks so rich and warm. I love that real wood floors are so indestructible and the beauty of the wood can be brought back.

Replacing this nasty carpet in our house is on my short list, replacing with wood. Probably a laminate, since real solid wood is so expensive. I wonder how to know which brand is safe regarding formaldehyde, since apparently the manufacturing companies flat-out lie about it.
Red, your work is wonderful. I can see that you love what you do.

Those are beautiful floors and you did a great job! We had oak floors installed in the living room, parlour, and dining room. Best decision we made. After 25 plus years they still look brand new.

Red that is beautiful! You guys do good work! I just hate what most renters do to a rental unit.
Make that some or even many, but I don't think most renters are all that destructive. We've had tenants for the past 40 years with only a very few real problems.

Lately, our tenants have 'replaced' themselves when they move. That is, they tell their friends (and fellow church members) that their home will be available for rent soon and give them our number to call. Good people tend to have good friends and we've been getting good tenants with this system. Of course, the fact that our rents are relatively low and we take care of problems asap, makes the tenants appreciative as well.
