Every week or so I turn the compost pile. This week I found lots of good grubs for the chickens! The chickens were so happy!!

Good protein! :sick

I turned over a log once and found a bunch and my ridiculous chickens just stared at them. One did finally figure out that they were edible and she ate them all by herself, about a dozen or so! The others never knew what they were missin'! HA

I remember when I dumped a cup of grubs on the ground in front of a bunch of 11 week old chicks. The chicks had been free ranging a while, but they just stared at the grubs. One would very cautiously approach them, then jump back when a grub moved. Finally one got close enough to take a bite. In just a few seconds the others joined in and massacred the grubs.

I see the red worms in my compost and say...the compost needs them more than the chickens. :D I want great compost. We need it.

We get all excited when we find the grubs here too... my daughter (who used to be so scared of them) would grab them up by the handful and run them to the chickens' coop. Those were some happy birds!!!! :D

I don't give my nice worms to the chickens, either. When the compost is ready, I take a few shovels of it and put it in a kiddie swimming pool, and let them take out all the sowbugs and other such creatures. But... by the time the compost is ready my worms have moved over to the more "fresh" compost.

For many years I wanted a worm farm. Then after I started up the compost pile, I was happy to see, without much effort on my part, I had my worm farm!!
