All the wild plum trees in our area (there are a lot) are horribly thick-skinned and bitter. The one has black knot or whatever that disease is called with the big black scabs that grow around the branches, and really bad galls on the leaves. Is that whats making for such nasty fruits? My BIL tells me that when they were little that plum tree was so yummy...

Are you sure you are getting ripe plums? The trees we had when I was growing up would have a lot of small bright red plums that did not ripen but fell off the tree. They were pretty awful. On that particular tree, the ripe plums were a lot bigger and more yellow-red and delicious. I know different plum trees have different colored plums, but I just remember how bad those little red immature ones were.

No, these ones are soft and have really sweet juice, but if you bite into the skin its killer bitter.
