i'm just curious if anyone has any reputable places to buy strawberry plants? i was thinking from FedCo since they are one of the closest to me.

i want to be sure that i what happen to me a few years ago won't happen again. i ordered from a lousy place that held onto my plants for about 3 weeks after they said they shipped them. when the package arrived the plants were mostly dead or covered in mold on their crowns and roots. some survived but out of 100 plants only 25 had survived, by the end of the summer 10 were left and survived the winter to come back but never really gave me any fruit before just dying off for good. :(

I have never ordered strawberries. I go to local nurseries and buy plants that look healthy. I don't mind ordering seeds- but I like to see the plants I am buying! So far, so good...

I have always bought from the local agriculture extension service. They know what is best for the locale. Over the last 40 years I have never been disappointed and the price is right!

A few years ago I ordered a bunch from Johnny's Seeds. They were nice, healthy plants and have done beautifully in my garden. In fact I am digging up lots of runners every year and gifting them to my coworkers. :)

i would like to get them from either Johnny's, Miller's over in NY, or Fedco but wasn't sure if anyone might know how good they have been or knew of better places to get them from. FedCo carries and recommends varieties that do well in our area and they are my first choice since they also have low bush blueberries i might get too.

unfortunately our local community extension lost its funding from our county last year and now there is no longer an annual plant sale :( i should have bought some last year before this happened but funds have been very tight with dh out of work and i missed their deadline for ordering.

I'm pretty sure we got ours from Burpee last year. Our 25 plants from last year completely filled up our 4x8 raised bed by the end of the year! Lets just hope that most of those come back this year! :)

doh, someone mentioned starting their plants from seeds and i just remembered in my huge stash of seeds that i have some for 3 different types of strawberries i got for last year that i didn't start. i also got some for blackberries, red raspberries and blueberries. so i'll have to try those instead this year. :D i'll save myself some money by doing this!

any idea on how long it could take for the strawberry plants started from seeds to be big enough before starting to give me berries?

With strawberries it is recommended to not harvest the first year. You should pinch off any flowers the first year.
