What a bunch of elitist snobs!

"I saw it as a desecration to put a gardens there," he said.
A garden is a desecration?

Oh good lord!

This reminds me of something that happened in Colorado Springs several years ago. People were moving to an exclusive neighborhood on the North end of town. Then they started complaining about the noise of air planes. Well, the North end of Colorado Springs is home to the AIR FORCE ACADEMY! It has been for DECADES!

The wealthy were raising a fuss and calling their congressmen and senators to get them to curtail the training because they didn't like the noise. Then 9-11 happened and they suddenly shut the heck up :p Idiots.

When I was a kid, the same thing happened near Wausau, WI. People moved out in to the country and then got all surprised that the people already living in the boonies have cows and they poop! WHO KNEW!?!?!

THIS is EXACTLY why I moved to the kinda shabby little town where I now live--NOBODY is going to build homes behind me, and NOBODY is gonna make me change my zoning. I have my own little paradise, where my neighbors like to pet and feed grass to my horses, and I can landscape and grow WHATEVER without a backlash. I just have to keep the lawn mowed.

I think they could probably work something out if they did put some restrictions on who exactly would be using the space. If it was limited to people living within a certain radius, being actual neighbors, it would foster a better community spirit. Traffic would not be a problem if most people were within walking distance (a mile or two is nothing to walk and good summer exercise besides!) I don't think they should dump the idea entirely.

However, they will have to allot more land for the project to have enough community gardens to serve the whole Atlanta area, which would probably take some finaggling.

I think it sad if they cannot work out some sort of deal on this.... I imagine too, being that a congressman lives there, it is probably a very wealthy neighborhood where most people who do not care to garden (or pay someone else to do their landscaping) can easily pay more to buy organic if they choose, so of course it would not mean as much to those people. I think most of their arguments are a bit on the selfish side really. Sure, they are probably worried about the possibility of annoyance and reduction in their home-value, but we are not our own islands--unless you want to move to the boondox, you have to learn to live with the existance of other people in this world.....random rant, sorry...

This also reminded me a problem with a wealthy neighborhood over looking an older (but still nice) neighborhood. The older neighborhood had laundry lines out in their yards to dry clothes, they were cutting back on electric costs and some of the older homes didn't have washer and driers still.

You could see all of these people's yards from the nicer/richer neighboring homes yards... SO... like rational wealthy people they complained until a law went into effect that you could no longer have clothes lines in your yard to dry clothes. Thus law stated that SOMEONE running through the yard could unknowingly run into the line and choke themselves to death, or be decapiated!!!!

I could not believe this.

How come I can't complain to my senators that rich people's houses are too big and they are obscuring my view of the sun and should immediately take off their roof!!! Grrrrrr....

I mean really, I'm just tired of the rich whine and someone takes immediate action. Chances are this would have been nipped in the bud back when, but it sounds like some of the wealthy in the neighborhood may be on BOTH sides of the coin, causing it to take more time. But in the end, its best to throw out the whole basket of apples rather then dig out the good ones or cut out the bad spots.

DOWN WITH HOA'S I SAY!!!

My thoughts exactly! What is more beautiful than a garden??? Although, you know what a rowdy, rude, disrespectful bunch gardeners are.... Ducks, I'm with you - give me country living where people have better things to do than complain about what I'm doing to my yard.
