RIP Tina

My oldest dog Tina was going to be 14 in Dec. She had a large tumor I was watching, dreading the day I would have to put her to sleep. Last night she ate dinner and ran around the yard. This morning I found her dead in her bed. This is strange to write about the death of one of my dogs but I was very happy. Nothing for me is harder then the decision to put down one of my dogs. I made that mistake with Tina's mother. Twice I had appointments for my Vet to come over that I canceled. RIP old girl you will be missed.

I am glad it was quick for her. It is so hard to lose a dog. So sorry.

I had an old dog named Tina.

She was a Border Collie and shared the farm with Dad's birddog. Tina moved into town with us but we often left her off the chain. There was an elementary school just a half block away. She loved kids ... and I wasn't really a kid, anymore.

A good stockdog, Tina would try to herd the kids into our yard. One day, Jay Jay showed up at the door and said that she wouldn't allow him to walk by. If he had been older than 5, maybe it wouldn't have been a problem. A kindergartener, he would head home at noon. Tina began to follow him. She would return later and enjoy the older kids as they walked home.

Tina decided that she also liked Jay Jay's older sister and would follow her in the afternoon. Jay Jay came by one day and asked if Tina could stay the night. She left happily with him. He reported back the next morning that "she was gooood!"

That was just about the end of Tina living with us ...

Steve, our "crying smiley" is a little too dramatic but there is a tear in my eye for both our Tina's, NyBoy.

I have never been blessed by having one of my pets make that decision for me - although I have wanted it many times. The missing them is hard, but maybe it's somehow not quite so bitter since you weren't forced to have a hand in it?

@Nyboy it's so hard when you lose a faithful friend but as Cane said somehow it's much easier when they go on their own and you don't have to make that awful decision.

When I was a teenager, I thought long and hard about becoming a vet. We had a family friend who was a veterinarian. He took me to meetings, Dad and I went on a working trip with him. We also knew 2 kennel owners. One was a longtime family friend. I worked for the other.

Having to treat animals in pain and causing them pain was a deal-breaker on the career. Later, I read all of James Herriot and watched the TV series, several times over. I came to understand that a vet's client is the human. Decisions about the animal friend are made by a person.

Euthanasia is for the benefit of both, the pet and his/her human friend. The difficult decision is made, often late in the game. Pain is ended.

So sorry Nyboy. Their lives are far too short.
It seems that she went the best way though, a little run around the yard and a long nap.

I look back down the years and treasure all the special quirks about every dog we've ever spent our lives with.

Well, all but that one dog, Stetson.
But that's a story for another time...

@thistlebloom I love a good story, maybe when you get back from your ride. Dogs that I had to put down, I always knew it was time when I held a piece of chicken under their nose and they turned their head away. They where telling me loud and clear they where ready. I was there the day she was born, she was one of the prettiest dogs I ever bred.

So sorry about your dog, but I'm glad to hear she went quickly and peacefully.

My girl turned 15 in October and other than having to wear an inflatable collar to keep her from messing with her skin cancer tumor (they can bleed like crazy), she's running around and feeling good. I always pray that when the time comes, she'll go quickly too.

So it is a pity to lose the animals we love. Good, she lived with you and be loved. It is good that she did not suffer much.
