Can't help noticing how much that spider in the first photo resembles the prey in its jaws... coincidence?

i think so.

the one i saw was not very active and was kind of hiding in a small bean leaf crease but that could have been because i was around it weeding. i wish i'd had my camera with me because it was very cute, and like i said, at first i wasn't even sure it was a spider at all.

I've seen similar spiders on my pole beans... but they were black, and you had to look twice to see that they were spiders, not ants.

i saw a few black ants yesterday that were the large carpenter ants which were almost an inch long about 1/2x bigger than spider. big honkers very busy turning rotting wood into humus. i don't mind if they are out in the gardens eating the various chunks of wood i've put out there for that very reason, but i do have to keep an eye on the house to make sure none try to get going in the walls.

We are having an invasion of black aphids on the trees in the neighborhood.

I've been curious about what predators are showing up ... not nearly enough lady bugs!

The aphids are everywhere downwind from the trees and I was looking at the bugs on a rock, yesterday. One was much more active than the slow moving aphids but about the same size. A spider! Of aphid-size ...

He froze, with his tail up. I don't think he even noticed my presence, just going about his "spider business" ;). After 10 or 15 seconds in that pose, he raced of to another location on the rock, about 2" distant. There he ... uh ... shadow boxed for about an equal amount of time. Aphids everywhere but I think that this display was for another spider that I hadn't seen. He then disappeared over the edge of the rock.

:) Steve

may have been testing the wind for sailing? small spiders can do some fun things with webs to get around via the wind...
