Scale(?) on my orchid cactus(Epiphyllum)

I was tiold that the brown spots on the leaves are scale. and could be treated with an application of alcohol with a q-tip. I tried that, but the problem is increasing and I am afraid I will lose this beautiful plant. Any suggestions?
I tried to download an image of the diseased leaves, but need direction on how to do this. I am a newbe to this site. Thanks in advance, for your help.

Spray it with a good blast of water and you will remove most of them. I can keep them at bay this way. Look at all the tight places where they hide.

Here is a chemical solution. I have never used it.
It's called Orthene 97, and costs about $15 for a 12oz can.
Stinks, though.
