I've got 4 small (8" or so) pots on my porch rail. Even though they've been blown off several times - and completely un-potted a couple of times - they're still doing well.
Is there some handy-dandy trick to securing small pots so that they aren't blown around during storms???

Are they plastic or clay? Those new lightweight fake clay pots are just too light to take much wind. You could use a bungee cord or even a twine to go under the rail, then over the pot. The plants should cover it before too long, if they are trailing.

They're plastic. :/ I had thought about tying them down but was a little afraid I might come home to find the pot hanging under the rail and the poor plant STILL on the ground! I keep hoping that my roommate will step out the door and set them down on the porch when a storm is blowing up...
Not sure about earthquake putty... will have to look into that. Wonder what else I could use it for???? Maybe a couple of gobs on the side of the barn for hanging tools. I wonder if I could stick the spare tire on the tailgate of the truck so it isn't taking up space in the bed??? huuummmmmm.......

This might stress your plants a little, but you could remove the plants and screw the pots down with a small screw. Just a thought.:hu

i was thinking some of that industrial Velcro would work, but i know it will get wet and possibly not stick to the pot and railing after some time. i like the idea of screwing them down to the railing. you might want to use a metal washer with it to make it a little more secure. i'd be afraid that someone could still walk by and hit it and could crack the plastic pot if all that was used is a screw. just my humble opinion.

I had thought of the screw and washer too. They are sitting in those little round plastic trays to help keep them from drying out, so I think that a screw would just make it all leak out before the plant could use it.
Guess I'll try hooking a little bungee cord on one side, looping under the rail, and back up to hook the other side. Maybe I can find cords to match the pots :p
OH! Maybe I'll paint stripes on the pots to hide the cords! Yeah.. that's a good idea.

Cane, have you seen the planters made for deck rails? They hang on the railing and are wide , like a window box. You could put all the individual plants in those and they would be safe.
