These bright colored seed catalogs are always so welcome when the world outside has turned to monochromatic shades of white. I have almost all the seeds I need, but I love looking through the pages and dreaming of summer.

The arrival of the latest catalog reminded me that my saved seeds must surely be dry by now, so I packaged them up into little envelopes, and took stock of the commercially produced seeds I've accumulated.

I still have the 2 yr old Big fat and thick Baker Creek catalog, that is still teaching me things.
I got a couple of paper catalogs so far, including Seed Savers, though I am not sure, since I don't remember buying anything from them.
Wait a gosh darn minute--they are selling a cucumber called "Dragon's Egg", white, originated in Croatia (maternal family is from there,) and produces ALL SUMMER!!!
NO!! I slap my credit card hand. I will NOT buy any more seeds this year!!!

IMAGINE making pasta sauce from them!!

my experience from making juice from sweet cherry tomatoes was that it did not have much actual flavor other than the sweet.

i wouldn't mind using some in a sauce, but i would not plan the whole sauce around them.

I once read that beefsteak tomatoes could not be as sugary as cherries because the skins would burst. Cherries have a greater skin to pulp ratio. Somehow, I have trouble understanding this mathematically altho that probably is a reflection of my thinking. If the skins are of the same thickness, the depth of the pulp is certainly different but if we are talking about volume to surface ratio ... 🙃

Anyway, if you put tomatoes in the food processor without peeling, as I do, you will probably want to limit the cherries. They thicken the sauce or soup and limit tomato flavor, IMO. Go ahead and peel them, as DW can do by using broiler settings to toast cherries for her salsa sauce. BTW, for my soup especially, I prefer tomatoes with skins from the food processor or blender. The result is only cooked for 15-20 minutes and it would otherwise be rather watery. Flavor may be concentrated with longer cooking time but the fresh flavor becomes lost. That is Okay with pasta sauce because I'm loading it with other flavors and it is going in the freezer.

And then, I promptly brought out the 2024 Territorial catalog and the 2021 Kitazawa one :D. Territorial sent a card the other day that might as well said, "don't order from those early guys – our catalog will be in your mail box next month!" :D.

I don't even know if Kitazawa has a catalog now that it has been purchased by True Leaf. Often, I have ordered from them but not the most recent years and never from True Leaf. Nothing against TL and it's okay with me if the owners of Kitazawa wanted to retire. So far, the online information looks like TL may be trying to maintain the unique K inventory 🤞.
