I saved seed from a hybrid shallot and planted those in 2016. This is something @hoodat has done. Those plants developed offset roots. Those sets were saved through the winter and replanted this spring. Result: bulbs, not offsets ..!
When they flowered (!), it was obvious that they had run their course for 2017. They cooked up, smelling and tasting of shallots. I'm lost.
I grew Dutch and French shallots for over 20 years. They never bloomed. About 5 years ago, I began sowing hybrid shallot seed in the spring. Those plants were around longer through the season than plants growing from sets but did just fine! I liked hybrid shallots. How they came to be -- well, shallots just have to flower somewhere so that seeds can result.
Now, hybrids have two different parents. Pollen has to
be transferred. But, it just might be that one of the parents isn't a shallot. Shallots are Allium cepa. Bulb onions are Allium cepa. Seems odd that these are bulbs ... odd all around.
