We (finally) got the garden fenced -- TSC took ages to get the special deer and orchard fencing I wanted -- and now it needs... GATES!

Unfortunately the plans did not get communicated properly and where I wanted a small gate, I have an 8' opening.

So... I'm thinking of doing a double gate there, that way I can open only one half of it.

I'd like it to be wood, I'm thinking of the picket fence look, possibly with the top of the gates forming a curve.

Does that make any sense at all?

Pictures and ideas welcome!

Here's a picture of the gate my DH and I built last summer to contain our crazy chickens. It is a little over 6' wide. I borrowed a do-it-yourself book from my sister that she got at Lowes and the plans it gave resulted in a very sturdy gate. The crossbraces need to point upward to the center so that your gate won't ever sag. Mine is sided with more of the fencing, but I'm sure you could side the frame with pickets if you wanted.

ETA, I bought my hinges at Tractor Supply. They are heavy duty, for farm gates, not sure what they're called, but the circle part slips down over and sits on a peg that screws into the gate posts. I like them better than a book hinge because you get full range of motion and they can bear much more weight.

The two pieces look something like this:

My husband put ours together according to my design. I wanted the extra fencing we had used to match of course, and then stained the wood red to match all the raised beds and our deck. There is 6 ft there open for the fence to be in, they both swing open which is great when I have to back the truck in there for compost and mulching. The left gate has a bottom piece like an upside down "L" that I push into the ground to hold it closed when I don't need it and we just go in and out from the right gate.
