What exactly does that mean? Does that mean tearing out all the old vines and leaves to throw on the compost, or does it mean tilling it under, or actually running it thru a shredder?
Since it started freezing, I've been slowly throwing long vines of squash (plants which grew to ginormous proportions this year) to the cow and sheep. No one seems to like the tomato plants. I'm about ready to finish cleaning it all out as soon as I have another pain free day.

The cosmos went kinda wild this year. :)

I don't really know what is meant by shredding--maybe just what you want it to mean. But I love that old building behind your cosmos!

Southeast Oregon and down into that far southwest corner of Idaho is a really rugged and beautiful part of the world.

Thanks, so lucky. That was an old wood shed, but I use it for lambing and in really bad weather, my milk cow sleeps in there. :) It needs a new roof and some paint tho.

It's a good thing your critters won't eat the tomato plants...they're actually poisonous. The fruit is fine but the stems and leaves...very bad stuff...they're a member of the nightshade family.

As for shredding...smaller pieces decompose faster than bigger ones, so...depends on what you want/need. We take all that stuff and run the mower over it to chop it up...then into the compost with it :)

Your cosmos are lovely Petey. :rainbow-sun One of my favorites...and so carefree and easy to grow too.

I wish I had a shredder/chipper. I see them in the traders guide and on craigslist from time to time, but even used, I can't afford one right now. I think composting would be so much easier and productive with one. Somebody on here said once they even used theirs to shred old veggies to feed the chickens...can't remember who.
