I wouldn't even think of hitting anything on a gas furnace with a hammer! (A friend commented the other day on the handy two-way switch in the kitchen for the detached garage lights. I put that switch in years ago. Every time I touch it I think how I don't trust it. Astoundingly, I wired this house for the router off an old phone jack in the basement. Can hardly believe I'm communicating online right now!)

I was reading the ingredients on a bottle of Vicks Vaporub the other day. Maybe, you should give that a try. Mom's family used it with near religious commitment. In fact, when I had pneumonia as a teenager, ol Doctor Todd told me I had to allow Mom to rub that stuff on me or he would put me in the hospital! Anyway, I appreciate a little methyl salicylate, Robitussin and some eucalyptus cough drops these days but have to steel myself to rub the methyl salicylate oil on my feverish body.

Orange juice, ETC.! Vitamin C and "glow in the dark" ... without any home re-wiring!

Vicks Vapor Rub is in every bathroom !!!!! Remember mom rubbing our chest with it. I once saw the blue glass bottles for $8 at antique show, not sure when they switched to plastic jars

I wonder if it was the same kind of tar, back in the 60's a friends young son had very bad eczema, she had a medicine cabinet full of prescription meds that hadn't worked. Someone put her on to an ointment I think called Kleerex in no time at all the eczema cleared up, now that I think of it it might not have been pine tar, maybe coal tar? It was sold in a tin similar to what shoe polish comes in, sure smelled like tat and looked like axle grease.
