I went to WalMart yesterday looking for some yard supplies. The garden section was very poorly stocked. Well, that's not quite true. They had a large display of aluminum Christmas trees ( :tongue ) in assorted colors. Come on WalMart, it's only September!!!

Here in Central Texas it's still summer. Low last night was 63 and the expected high is 93. Just looked up the weather for Bentonville, Arkansas; high today of only 73, but by Tuesday it's supposed to get back up 90.

Why is WalMart trying to rush us through the year? :th

They are not the only ones, I stopped at Hobby Lobby 2 weeks ago and they had out ALL the Christmas stuff. TONS of it. Like 1/4 of the store! Of course they had Halloween and Thanksgiving out yet. As soon as they go they will put out MORE Christmas. Our local Farm & Fleet (Farm Supply Store) always has a big Toy Land opening, earlier every year. Usually about end of October now. *sigh*

The Halloween stores are opening . . !

I know, it is no news that this "holiday" is promoted more than a month early. I really don't think it used to be like that.

Yesterday, I was telling my son, who is just a 42 year old child, that I noticed the gruesomeness of All Hallows' Eve dropped away a little during the fall of 2001 and stayed that way for a couple of years. During the not-so-Cold War, maybe the prospect of Soviet missiles coming in over our heads kept us from celebrating Halloween to the fullest, as a modern tradition. Still, I thought we did real well with the kids celebrating in the olde days - running the bad spirits outta the village, and all that.

Halloween used to be for the kids, but it has turned into a huge party holiday for the partiers types, where they can dress up in disguise and let loose all inhibitions.

I well remember Halloween October 1962. The town we lived in decided to make a big huge kid's party at our elementary school with the new lights on at the new ball field. I guess it was to relieve all the tension of the nervousness that'd been so prevalent, school alerts, practicing to climb under desks, learning about atomic bombs when you are just 7. I went as a skeleton. It was a lot of fun!

These days it is police checkpoints looking for drunk drivers, parents escorting the kids, and only to close friend's houses. Incognito is a costume store in Ukiah. This is their busiest time of year. It's all in good fun, I hope.
