YAY!!! SNOW!!!!! I know it is fun for us southern state gardeners when we get the rare snow! The best part is, it melts and goes away before it gets irritating!

Give that squash it's own post!! Make it the cold survivor/mystery squash. Heck, living through the cold like that, you might have something there! Sell us some seeds! Then we can say :tongue to winter!

"My friend Corrine decided to walk from her house to my house, (5.9 miles!)

in what had to be the worse weather we have had in a long time!! Being from Spokane WA, she loves this weather! As you can tell."

You can send Friend Corrine home - that weather is exactly what is happening in Spokane! There is a 16mph wind with gusts above 25mph, a 23 windchill, and about .25" of snow and rain (precip) has been falling continuously, today!

Now, I've never seen a winter grown squash, and I've never seen a squash look quite like that one. Shorter daylight hours, cooler temps might keep it bushy with more rounded leaves.

Wait until it gets warm and more daylight hours! That squash will take off like mad!

Could not have been very cold snow for it to survive. And your friend from up north has a big hearty smile traipsing around in the storm like that. Reminds me of my aunt Eleanor!

We have had several nights in the 20's and teen's in the past few weeks. I do cover the squash when it is that cold. And so far, it hasn't even shown any frost damage, unlike many other plants in the same area of the yard.

I do hope it will produce fruit this spring/summer.

Her husband works here in Tucson, all his family is here. She HATES it here, all her kids and grandkids are in Spokane and the surrounding towns. This is the longest she has stayed here in Tucson. Usually she is only here from Dec. to April. But, she was here all summer and now looks like she will be here most of this summer too. Poor thing!!

My memories of Tucson are from a previous century . . . I visited a couple of times - late fall and winter.

I enjoyed spending several days there.

My daughter visited Tucson last year. I was anxious to learn if she enjoyed herself. "Did you go up one of the canyons from the city?" I couldn't remember just where I'd been but stayed with people at a little higher elevation and took a drive up out of the city. "Nope." She didn't have much more to say . . .

My elderly uncle lives in Tucson now. His daughter is a nurse there. He has a "little casita" in Green Valley and seems to enjoy it but all he wants to talk about anymore is politics . He has had an interesting life since retirement from the aerospace industry in California's central valley. First he moved to "Paradise." That's in the Sierras in California. Then he moved to the northern Oregon coast - YIKES! Then it was off to Grass Valley . . :p.

I can't imagine ever leaving the Oregon Coast!! I just loved the scenery up there when we did a Highway 1/101 trip up the coast from Los Angeles to Vancouver.

We do have great weather in the fall, winter and spring. I just HATE the summers here! And you can't beat our hiking trails for the "stark" beauty of the desert. I personally prefer trees and greenery to rocks, cactus and sand!! I will have to post some photos taken from a hike a couple of weeks ago for you.
Here is an album on Facebook of some photos. Let me know if you can see them or not.

Want to share your album? You can give friends or relatives this link:

Hope one of them works for you.

The 2nd link didn't work, Heidi. But, I saw the waterfall on the 1st . No, I'll take the rocks! I like rocks! . . . i must like rocks . . . that's about 1/2 of what is in my garden ~ rocks :/.

No, it is nice for a late summer vacation but I'm not moving to Newport, OR or anywhere nearby. You know, while the rest of the nation sweltered in 2012, parts of the NW coast had below normal temperatures!! How much below not being able to grow tomatoes and sweet corn do you want to go!??

This isn't just waaay up on the Olympic Peninsula. No, all the way down into California -- it is often difficult to grow any warm-season plants. Heck, you get far enuf south and it won't freeze during the winter but it doesn't warm up in the summer. And, the wind blows all the time! There are clouds and more clouds. Nope. Not for me.

I'd like to say that I've been to Las Vegas in the summer but that may not be true. I mean, anything from Barstow east seems to be hot at anytime of the year. . . I'm sure I'm wrong or, hope to be.
