The title pretty well sums it up. I've been trying to start spinach in the garden, but my germination rate appears to be zero. I don't know if the weather is too warm (mostly 70s during the day, 50s at night) or if there is some other operator error going on.

Anyway, I'm a setting myself up for more frustration by trying to grow it as a container plant?

I didn't inherit a green thumb from either side of the family (Why grow it when there's a perfectly good grocery store?) so my learning curve is a little wavy sometimes! Sure am glad that I found TEG for help, moral support and people who are as 'crazy' as I am.

I cannot relate to nor comment on your weather :p, as regards spinach. But I grew it very successfully in windowbox type containers (not on a window, on the ground in a sheltered spot) this past late-winter-early-spring.

Have you checked to make sure your seeds are viable? (You should be able to presprout a few in the fridge in a ziploc with damp paper towels).

GOod luck, have fun,

Pat

Thanks, Pat.

Soon as I get the apple butter going for today, I think I'll get a container ready and try that. I hadn't thought of checking viability, so I'll stick some in the fridge and see what happens. Probably need to check some other seeds, too while I'm at it.

I have a hard time getting spinach started in the garden too. Very few sprout. And those that do don't survive long. Several years I've tried. I think our red clay mud just doesn't agree well with it. I've grown lettuce in pots no trouble. I think I'll be trying some spinach too!

After whining about my non-existent spinach, what do I find this afternoon? What seems like zillions of little sprouts where I planted the spinach!:weee

Maybe I need to whine more often.
